Company Profile
Headwaters Floating Islands (HFI) provides effective, economical and elegant solutions to a wide variety of waterscape, water-quality and riparian habitat concerns. As the exclusive licensee and distributor of BioHaven™ Floating Treatment Wetlands and BioHaven™ Living Walkways for Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, HFI leads the market in expertise and experience.
Tim Mulholland, HFI president and a recognized expert in environmental engineering founded the company in December, 2008, to provide services to homeowners, farmers, fisheries, conservationists, golf courses, municipalities, real-estate developers, and others. Each market segment poses unique opportunities for the recycled polymer matrix technology at the heart of HFI’s BioHaven product line. This matrix was developed in 2000 by Floating Island International. Tested for five years before being offered to the public, over 1600 BioHavens have been successfully installed throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
BioHavens – HFI’s concentrated natural wetlands – are attractive, scalable, virtually self-sustaining water filtration installations. Flexibly designed to accept a wide variety of vegetation, BioHavens can be as simple as a 25 ft2 floating flower garden or as involved as several acres of water-line habitat intended to polish phosphorus and heavy metals from an effluent stream while creating new habitat for fish and fowl and protecting the shoreline from erosion.
As regulatory mandates for improved water-quality expand, HFI is well-positioned to provide economical, effective, environmentally sound solutions. Although there is limited competition, HFI’s technology and product offerings are less mechanical, require less maintenance, and offer outstanding benefits:
• Improved aesthetics – In addition to the natural beauty of the plants, water becomes clearer.
• Increased habitat – From the roots growing into the water, providing new food sources, to the shade and protection from avian predators, fish flourish. Above the water, the plantings can be used to attract a variety of life. For example, milkweed can be planted to attract Monarch butterflies.
• Low maintenance – Once the BioHaven is prepped and placed, it quickly becomes as self-sustaining as a lawn, garden or natural wetland.
• Nutrient and Pollutant removal – Depending on the plants selected, the BioHaven can reduce nitrogen, phosphorus and other organic waste as well as heavy metals and pharmaceuticals.
• Erosion mitigation/Wave management – Like any other large object in a waterway, BioHavens absorb wave energy, reducing erosion to surrounding natural shoreline.
Headwaters Floating Islands is committed to research and stewardship. As a leader in the field, HFI continually collects data on BioHaven installations, learning what works best for its clients and sharing that knowledge. As stewards of the environment, each member of the Headwaters team brings a passion for protecting nature while serving the community. This commitment goes beyond water-quality. As members of Business Optimists, HFI is part of an international network of businesses devoted to improving the lives of children.
Sound environmental science, outstanding technology and market expertise are the strengths of Headwaters Floating Islands. Couple this strength with a dedication to forming strategic partnerships with local experts throughout its territory, and Headwaters becomes the only choice for design, production and installation of BioHaven Floating Treatment Wetlands and BioHaven Living Walkways.
